Is It Normal to Feel Anxious About Your Anxiety?
Your heart races, you feel sweat starting to form in the palms of your hands, and your mouth becomes dry. Anxiety sometimes can come out of nowhere without warning or a specific known cause. But when it comes on it is noticeable and uncomfortable. You want it to stop so that you don’t spiral into a panic. It makes sense that you would fear anxiety when it can help in creating all of these experiences. But the solution does not come from trying to avoid or push it away. Why we have anxiety
Anxiety has served a survival purpose since the beginning of human existence. Anxiety tells us to get away from danger so that we can continue to live. It makes sense that anxiety shows up in our lives still even though we don’t experience similar dangers now that our ancestors had. Due to evolution, we experience it to protect us as it had lived on and protected so many in our past. Anxiety still has purpose in present-day dangers though like sensing danger from other people who could try to hurt us or heeding a warning sign. Unfortunately, anxiety can appear with no real cause or purpose to show up.
I fear it, should it be feared?
Now that you know where the anxiety comes from in a biological sense, you might be wondering how it can be stopped or prevented. We tend to want to push away feelings of unease that anxiety creates. We want to eliminate the feeling because it feels unproductive, unhelpful, and sometimes embarrassing. We are a society of people that try our best not to show our weaknesses. We think that if we show our anxiety we will worry others, we won’t get the job, or we will be seen as “annoying.” All at the same time anxiety rages on. We cannot out-think anxiety, it doesn’t like to be pushed down or pushed away because at some point it will rise again to the surface one way or another.
“The only thing that we have to fear is fear itself.”
This is a quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt that reigns true with anxiety. Fear can put us in a dark place if we let it consume our thoughts and actions. We sometimes avoid or push away anxiety due to not understanding it and having shame around having it. Instead of pushing it down, we need to push through it and accept it for what it is.
How can I work through it?
Working through anxiety and getting to a place where you can be more accepting of it takes practice and effort. It can take weeks to change new habits and anxiety is no different to work with. When anxiety shows up practice accepting it as it is and tell it that you appreciate what it’s trying to tell you but that you are not going to let it overwhelm you. Changing dialogue towards anxiety also takes work to interrupt and reframe. Meeting with a mental health professional can be the most helpful in learning how to work with your anxiety instead of against it.
